Survival German #5: At the Ausländerbehörde (Residence Permit)

Survival German #5

If you’re from outside the EU, you need a residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel) to stay in Germany, and the Ausländerbehörde (immigration office) is where you get it. It’s famously bureaucratic — so here’s exactly how it works and the German to survive it.

How it actually works

  1. Book a Termin at your local Ausländerbehörde as early as possible — in big cities the wait can be months, and you must apply before your current visa expires.
  2. Gather your documents: passport, biometric photos, proof of Anmeldung, a job contract or study place, health insurance, and the completed application form.
  3. Attend your appointment, hand over the documents, and give your fingerprints for the electronic permit card (eAT).
  4. Pay the fee. If your permit isn’t ready yet, you get a Fiktionsbescheinigung — a temporary certificate that keeps your stay legal.
  5. Collect your electronic residence permit (eAT card) weeks later, by post or a pick-up appointment.

The German you’ll need

Ich beantrage eine Aufenthaltserlaubnis. — I’m applying for a residence permit.

Ich möchte meinen Aufenthaltstitel verlängern. — I’d like to extend my residence permit.

Ich habe alle Unterlagen dabei. — I have all the documents with me.

Wie lange dauert die Bearbeitung? — How long does processing take?

Bekomme ich eine Fiktionsbescheinigung? — Will I get a temporary certificate?

Was kostet der Antrag? — How much does the application cost?

At the counter: a real dialogue

Sachbearbeiter: Guten Tag. Worum geht es?
Hello. What’s it about?

Anna: Ich beantrage eine Aufenthaltserlaubnis.
I’m applying for a residence permit.

Sachbearbeiter: Haben Sie alle Unterlagen?
Do you have all the documents?

Anna: Ja, hier sind mein Pass, der Arbeitsvertrag und die Anmeldung.
Yes, here are my passport, my work contract and my registration.

Sachbearbeiter: Gut. Ich brauche noch Ihre Fingerabdrücke.
Good. I still need your fingerprints.

Anna: Natürlich. Wie lange dauert die Bearbeitung?
Of course. How long does processing take?

Sachbearbeiter: Etwa sechs Wochen. Sie bekommen eine Fiktionsbescheinigung.
About six weeks. You’ll get a temporary certificate.

Anna: Vielen Dank für Ihre Hilfe.
Thank you for your help.

Insider tips

  • Book your Termin the instant you can — big-city waits stretch into months, and you must apply before your current permit expires.
  • If your permit isn’t ready in time, the Fiktionsbescheinigung legally bridges the gap — but check it’s valid for re-entry before you travel.
  • Bring every document plus copies. One missing paper usually means a brand-new appointment.
  • English is often limited here — this is a prime situation to rehearse with a tutor or bring a German-speaking friend.
  • Keep digital scans of everything you submit; you’ll reuse them at every renewal.
