If you’re from outside the EU, you need a residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel) to stay in Germany, and the Ausländerbehörde (immigration office) is where you get it. It’s famously bureaucratic — so here’s exactly how it works and the German to survive it.
How it actually works
- Book a Termin at your local Ausländerbehörde as early as possible — in big cities the wait can be months, and you must apply before your current visa expires.
- Gather your documents: passport, biometric photos, proof of Anmeldung, a job contract or study place, health insurance, and the completed application form.
- Attend your appointment, hand over the documents, and give your fingerprints for the electronic permit card (eAT).
- Pay the fee. If your permit isn’t ready yet, you get a Fiktionsbescheinigung — a temporary certificate that keeps your stay legal.
- Collect your electronic residence permit (eAT card) weeks later, by post or a pick-up appointment.
