Germany’s public transport is excellent once you crack the ticket system — U-Bahn, S-Bahn, trams, buses and the flat-rate Deutschlandticket. Here’s how to ride and the German to buy a ticket.
How it actually works
- Learn the network: U-Bahn (metro), S-Bahn (city rail), Straßenbahn (tram), Bus, and regional trains. One local ticket usually covers all of them in a city.
- Buy before you board — from an Automat (machine), an app, or a counter. Options: a single (Einzelfahrkarte), a day pass (Tageskarte), or the flat-rate Deutschlandticket (~€58/month, all local & regional transport nationwide).
- Validate if needed: some paper tickets must be stamped (entwerten) in the little machine before you travel.
- Ride — many systems have no barriers, but Kontrolleure (inspectors) check tickets; no valid ticket means a hefty fine.
- For long distances, use Deutsche Bahn (ICE/IC) — separate tickets; book early for cheaper Sparpreis fares.

Buying a ticket: a real dialogue
Anna: Entschuldigung, eine Einzelfahrkarte zum Zentrum, bitte.
Excuse me, a single ticket to the centre, please.
Verkäufer: Das macht 3,20 Euro.
That’s 3.20 euros.
Anna: Muss ich umsteigen?
Do I have to change?
Verkäufer: Ja, an der Hauptwache in die U2.
Yes, at Hauptwache onto the U2.
Anna: Gilt das auch mit dem Deutschlandticket?
Is that covered by the Deutschlandticket too?
Verkäufer: Ja, damit fahren Sie überall.
